Darryl Ahner, Ph.D., dean of Wright State University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, talked to the Dayton Daily News about why more students are enrolling in computer science programs at Dayton-area universities.
For instance, Wright State found computer science was the second-most popular major for first-time students in the fall of 2024, with 140 students, just behind nursing, which enrolled 363 first-time students.
Ahner told the Dayton Daily News that Wright State engineering and computer science students tend to end up working in one of three types of jobs: working at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, working for defense contractors or working for any other type of company.
“Nothing is just the mechanical system anymore, it’s all internet of things,” he said. “Everything’s connected.”
Everything, from the F-35 plane to the data that companies collect to better see who their customers are involves some type of coding and computer science, he said.
He said even with artificial intelligence able to write code, it’s still going to be a field that people need to be involved in.
“The outlook is going to be really, really strong,” Ahner said.
