James Augustine, M.D., is a proud graduate of Wright State University, along with his wife, Linda, ’81, and his son Josh, ’05. Augustine is an emergency physician and serves with U.S. Acute Care Solutions based in Canton, Ohio. He is also a clinical professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine.
After undergraduate education at The Ohio State University, Augustine completed medical school and his emergency medicine residency at Wright State University.
He is committed to improvements in the world’s systems of emergency care, serving a variety of roles over a 40-year career with public safety services. He did his initial firefighter and EMT training while in medical school. After serving as the president of the regional fire-EMS council, he became the first chair of the Ohio EMS board.
Augustine moved to Atlanta in 2001 and served as medical director for Atlanta Fire Rescue and its International Airport Fire Rescue Division. He later served as assistant fire chief and medical director of the Washington, D.C., Fire-EMS Department and the Metropolitan Police Department. He is also the medical director of the Washington Township Fire Department near Dayton and the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
Augustine is a national leader in the design and operations of emergency departments. His emergency medicine career started at Miami Valley Hospital and with organizational skills learned from the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association.
He served on The Joint Commission and chaired its Hospital Professional and Technical Advisory Committee. He was a key faculty member of the Harvard University Emergency Department of the Future program. He recently completed two terms on the board of directors of the American College of Emergency Physicians and continues to serve on the board of governors of the ACEP Emergency Medicine Data Institute. He has had a 30-year role as the vice president of the Emergency Department Benchmarking Alliance, an international organization of emergency department leaders.
The pride of Augustine’s life is his wife, Linda, and their three grown children and four great-grandchildren.
