Wright State University’s Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries will present a retrospective exhibition of works by New York painter Simon Carr.
“Simon Carr: Just Beyond Seen, Paintings and Drawings 2007-2024” is on display from Nov. 12 to Dec. 14 in the Stein Galleries, 160 Creative Arts Center on Wright State’s Dayton Campus.
The gallery will host an artist talk and opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m.
Curated by Glen Cebulash, professor of art at Wright State, the exhibition showcases a retrospective of works by Carr, an artist who lives and works in New York City.
Carr’s recent paintings, drawings and prints have focused on street and subway scenes, landscapes of upstate New York and animals in the landscape.
“An ongoing curatorial interest for me is the work of second- and third-generation New York School figurative artists,” Cebulash said. “Simon Carr’s paintings and drawings exemplify that tradition, which is grounded in a commitment to form and color as a means of humane expression.”
Carr has exhibited widely, most recently at the Bowery Gallery in New York, Westbeth Gallery, The Painting Center, Prince Street Gallery and Long Island University’s Selena Gallery. His work is represented by the Bowery Gallery in New York City and the Alice Gauvin Gallery in Washington, D.C.
Carr teaches drawing at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, which is part of the City University of New York.
