Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine has earned full continuing accreditation for its Doctor of Medicine program from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), reaffirming the school’s commitment to high-quality medical education.
The accreditation reflects the extensive work and dedication of faculty, staff and students who contributed to the preparation process, said Raj Mitra, M.D., dean of the Boonshoft School of Medicine and chief academic officer of Premier Health.
“This was truly a team effort,” he said.
A limited virtual site visit by the LCME is scheduled for 2027 as part of the continuing review cycle.
The LCME, jointly sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association, is the accrediting body for M.D.-granting medical schools in the United States and Canada. It evaluates whether medical education programs meet established quality standards in areas such as curriculum management, educational resources, infrastructure, continuous improvement and student support. Accreditation allows institutions to qualify for federal grants and programs and ensures graduates are eligible to take licensing exams required to practice medicine in the United States.
The Boonshoft School of Medicine’s LCME site visit took place in April 2025. Preparing for the visit required years of detailed work and coordination across the medical school, led by the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee.
“The process is an opportunity to analyze and improve every aspect of our M.D. program so we can continue to provide the best possible training opportunities for our current and future students,” Mitra said.
He added that the achievement underscores both the strength of the program and the importance of the Boonshoft School of Medicine’s mission.
He noted that the mission of the Boonshoft School of Medicine is to serve the Dayton region and the state of Ohio by educating physicians who stay and practice in the communities that need them most. With two-thirds of Ohio’s counties facing critical access challenges in primary care, the medical school plays a key role in helping meet statewide workforce needs.
“We are one of the state’s leaders in supplying primary care physicians and in producing graduates who remain in Ohio to practice,” Mitra said. “This accreditation ensures that we can continue meeting those workforce needs and positively impact the health of our region and our state.”
The Boonshoft School of Medicine will continue advancing its mission to educate the next generation of physicians while upholding the highest standards of medical education, Mitra said.
“I’m deeply proud of our school’s commitment to excellence,” Mitra said. “I’m excited for all that we will accomplish together in the years ahead.”
