Wright State trailed by just two with 12:13 remaining, only to see Cleveland State outscore the Raiders 29-17 the rest of the way as the Vikings won 73-59 in the second round of the Horizon League Championship Friday night at U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee.
After Vaughn Duggins opened the scoring with two free throws, CSU scored 13 straight points, including a pair of Jeremy Montgomery three-pointers. The margin was still 11 until a 16-6 Raider run made it 22-21 at the 5:01 mark of the first half.
Cleveland State pushed the lead back up to six before two more Duggins foul shots cut the deficit to 31-27 at the half.
The Raiders shot just 22 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes compared to 39 percent for the Vikings, but WSU stayed close by hitting 13 of 16 free throws while Cleveland State was a perfect nine for nine.
Two Cooper Land threes in the first eight minutes of the second half drew Wright State to within two, the second being 44-42 with 12:13 remaining. CSU, however, followed with a 26-5 run over the next eight minutes to put the game out of reach at 70-47.
Wright State shot 55 percent in the second half to finish at 36 percent overall, but the Vikings were even better, connecting for 59 percent the final 20 minutes to end the night at 48 percent overall. Cleveland State also hit 26 of 30 foul shots for the game while the Raiders were 19 of 24.
Duggins and Troy Tabler, both playing in their final game as a Raider, each had 12 points while Land and Cole Darling had eight.
Montgomery paced Cleveland State (26-7) with 16 points while Horizon League Player of the Year Norris Cole had 15, Trevon Harmon 14 and Josh McCoy 12 off the bench.
Wright State finishes with a final record of 19-14.
