Former Buckeye football player and current ESPN sports analyst Chris Spielman will deliver the keynote address at this year’s annual Wright State University Academy of Medicine dinner on April 27. The event will be held in the Ponitz Center at Sinclair Community College and will include a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m., in addition to the evening’s program.
This annual event honors outstanding medical students, residents and faculty from Boonshoft School of Medicine while recognizing the dedicated work of members of the Wright State University Academy of Medicine in an unforgettable evening of camaraderie and celebration. Each year, the event features a keynote speaker who is a luminary in the field of medicine, arts or entertainment.
This year’s speaker is Chris Spielman. Spielman made a name for himself during the four years he played for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He is an All-American football player who went on to have an all-pro career in the NFL for more than 10 years. In 1998, he took a year off from his NFL career when his wife, Stefanie, was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a courageous fight, Stefanie lost her battle with breast cancer in November 2009.
Over the years, Spielman has been very active as a breast cancer awareness advocate and has shared his family’s touching and inspiring story with audiences around the country. In addition to serving as an analyst for ESPN’s coverage of college football games, Spielman continues to help lead the fight against breast cancer while raising money for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
The Academy of Medicine Dinner is open to the public. General admission for non-members is $50. The registration deadline is April 22. Proceeds will benefit Wright State medical students. For more information, visit http://www.med.wright.edu/academy.
