After high school, Smith enrolled at Wright State University without a scholarship. He became Wright State’s closer and developed a sidearm delivery. Smith was chosen by the New York Mets in the third round of the June 2006 amateur draft, and reached the majors in 2007. Smith was traded to Cleveland after the 2008 season.
