Sculpture professor’s outdoor art on display

The artwork of Thomas Macaulay can be seen on campus throughout Fall Quarter.

WSU Creek Trail Lookouts, a work of site-specific landscape art by Wright State sculpture professor Thomas Macaulay, will be open to the public beginning Labor Day weekend.

The artwork offers a private retreat in the midst of a vibrant university.

You enter the trail by walking past, or through, the artist’s in-progress outdoor environment. The work has several levels, enhanced by evergreen trees and shrubs. It features concrete curb form seating that provides group discussion and gathering spaces removed from busy campus life.

This summer, the artist extended the environment to include a woodland walk. You pass over a bridge and then along a creek to stacked brick seating areas, where you may pause and contemplate the sights and sounds of nature.

Macauley's work has several levels, enhanced by evergreen trees and shrubs. It features concrete curb form seating that provides group discussion and gathering spaces removed from busy campus life.

This art installation is the last in a series of four outdoor temporary artworks by area artists, co-sponsored by Wegerzyn Gardens Foundation and the Dayton Visual Arts Center.

The series promotes the dramatic “stick sculpture” created for Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark by world-recognized artist, Patrick Dougherty.

The first of these works, Canal Men by Leesa Haapapuro, was exhibited in April at Fifth Third Field and at Carillon Historical Park in May. The second, Floating Sounds by Michael Bashaw, is on view at Cox Arboretum through the summer. The third, Community Revitalization Shrine #6, by Bing Davis, is located on the north side of West Third Street, just west of the Aviation Heritage National Historical Park in the Wright Dunbar Business District.

WSU Creek Trail Lookouts is located on the Wright State University campus near the intersection of Wright State Rd. and University Blvd. Due to Fall Quarter classes, visitors may park in the adjacent parking lot (Lot 18) on weekends only.
