RecycleMania contest: Test your skills of turning trash into treasure

Have you ever had a cool idea for reusing something? Have you had some creative ideas for artistically displaying discarded objects that could be reused or made into art?

To celebrate RecycleMania 2012, Wright State is hosting an art sculpture competition for students to display their creativity.

Contestants will sculpt materials that were discarded or designated as recycled or donated to the Montgomery County Municipal Recycling Facility (MCMRF). The Wright State Office of Sustainability, Custodial Services, Art Department and Montgomery County Solid Waste District are partnering to see how creative students can turn trash into treasure.

Sculptures will be judged on originality, creativity and how they capture a unique perspective of objects that could otherwise be dumped in the landfill.

Made from recyclables, this alligator sculpture shows how to take the bite out of wasting materials.

A mandatory sign-up and informational meeting for entrants will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27. A list of available and acceptable materials will be provided to each entrant, as well as guidelines for visits to the MCMRF site. Location of the meeting and general guidelines will be posted on the Wright State sustainability website.

Only one entry per person or team will be accepted. Prizes will be given for winning sculptures. All entries will be displayed in the Student Union for preliminary judging on Friday, April 6, with the formal judging and award ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Winners will be announced on the Wright State sustainability website on April 9.
