BSOM students to hold food drive April 7-14

Each day, The Foodbank provides an average of more than 11,786 healthy, nutritious meals for local children, families and adults in need

At a time of year when food pantries are depleted of vital donations, Wright State University medical students are supporting the local community by organizing a food drive for The Foodbank, Inc. The event is inspired and sponsored by the Boonshoft School of Medicine Phi Ro Sigma student chapter, Wright Copy and Two Men and a Truck, Inc.

Student volunteers will visit neighborhoods near the Wright State campus beginning Saturday, April 7, to hand out flyers and inform residents about the event. They will return on Saturday, April 14, from noon to 6 p.m., to collect donations of non-perishable food items. Donations will also be accepted at a central collection point in front of White Hall, located just off Center Road on the Wright State campus, during these same hours, and collection bins will be located throughout the surrounding community in the weeks leading up to the event.

The Foodbank depends on donations from individuals and businesses in order to support more than 100 charitable food relief organizations throughout Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties. Each day The Foodbank provides an average of more than 11,786 healthy, nutritious meals for local children, families and adults in need. When donations decline during seasonal lulls, such as early spring, supplies run low and limit the organization’s capacity to provide this critical service.

Audra Horomanski, a first-year medical student at Wright State and spokesperson for the food drive, said the need is especially great for items such as high protein foods, canned tuna, peanut butter, pasta and sauces, canned fruit and vegetables, soups, rice, cereal and staples such as flour, sugar and cooking oil.
