Men’s basketball pulls out 70-68 double OT win at Green Bay

A J.T. Yoho three with seven seconds remaining in the second overtime gave the men’s basketball team a dramatic 70-68 Horizon League win at Green Bay Thursday night.

Wright State trailed 24-10 after back-to-back Cole Stefan threes, the second with 7:55 remaining in the first half, but closed the gap to 32-28 at the half with a 22-4 run. Jerran Young then gave the Raiders their first lead of the night at 37-35 on a jumper at the 14:04 mark of the second half.

Wright State, however, trailed 51-46 before going on a 6-1 to force the first overtime, with Yoho tying it on a three with 1:57 left.

Down 60-56 in the first overtime with 51 seconds to play, Yoho hit another three to cut the deficit to one and after Green Bay hit two of four foul shots, a desperation triple by Miles Dixon tied it at 62 heading to another extra period.

In the second overtime, the Raiders trailed three times, the final occasion at 68-67 as Brown hit the second of two free throws with 31 seconds left.  After each team turned the ball over, Wright State had one final chance and Yoho capitalized as he connected on a deep three from the top of the circle with seven seconds left to put the Raiders up two.

Green Bay had one last chance, but a Brown jumper from the foul line rimmed out as the game ended.

The game was just the fifth double overtime contest in Wright State history and the first since a 90-87 decision over #20 Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse on January 2, 2002.

The Raiders shot 42 percent overall, 11 of 20 from three-point range, and hit five of six free throws while the Phoenix hit for 36 percent from the floor, 5 of 14 from behind the arc and made 23 of 33 foul shots.

Yoho led the way with 19 off the bench for the Raiders while Dixon chipped in 13 off the bench and Young 11 in a reserve role.  Overall, the WSU bench outscored the Green Bay bench 49-15.

Brown paced the Phoenix (12-12, 6-5 Horizon) with 17 points while Sykes had 16 and Stefan 11.  Fouse had a near double-double of nine points and 15 boards.

Wright State (16-8, 7-4 Horizon) wraps up the Wisconsin trip on Saturday, February 9, with an  8:00 Eastern contest at Milwaukee.
