Wright State sees boom in neuroscience

With a state-of-the-art facility under construction and millions of dollars in grant funding pouring in, neuroscience is on the rise at Wright State University.

Driven by interest from students, a flood of physician talent and collaboration from area hospitals and businesses, the school has been growing its neuroscience footprint in recent years from an emerging interest into a major inter-disciplinary collaboration.

Neuroscience, the study of the nervous system, covers a variety of research including brain function, neurology and physical properties of the brain. While much remains unknown, officials say research is making significant gains into understanding brain functions and disorders.

Wright State’s neuroscience program has grown as neuroscientists and researchers have been recruited into its Boonshoft School of Medicine, said Timothy Cope, director of Wright State’s Neuroscience Institute.

Momentum began with an aggressive recruitment drive for professionals with expertise in techniques and technology in electrophysiology, microscopy and other talents, and with a common shared interest in neuroscience.
