Recent Wright State University film graduates Josh Deane and Yasser Souisri are still overwhelmed by the fact that their short film “The Sultan” screened at the Short Film Corner of the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival May 14-25.
The duo journeyed to France two weeks after graduation for an eye-opening experience that provided impressive networking opportunities including meeting film producers and film buyers. Short Film Corner was not part of the film festival’s main competition but serves an invaluable tool for budding filmmakers seeking cinematic insight from a global perspective.
“The entire process was so encouraging,” said Deane, 27. “So many people were excited to hear about us and trade information. I saw a lot of celebrities at Cannes, but, for me, the festival wasn’t about the celebrities. It was more about the international aspect. I met people from England, Italy, Spain and many other countries. It was great to speak with filmmakers from a completely different part of the world everywhere I turned. It was wonderful how much I had in common with those people who grew up from a completely different place.”
