Sondheim, considered the greatest living composer of American musical theater, takes the spotlight in the multimedia musical revue “Sondheim on Sondheim.” The regional premiere of this entertaining and captivating showcase continues through next Sunday inside Wright State University’s intimate black box Herbst Theatre.
Conceived in 2010 by frequent Sondheim collaborator James Lapine (“Sunday in the Park with George,” “Into the Woods”), “Sondheim on Sondheim” incorporates roughly 100 video segments featuring the prolific composer’s eye-opening testimonials on various aspects of his life and career. Although initially famous for writing the lyrics of “West Side Story” and “Gypsy,” Sondheim eventually revolutionized character, themes and music on Broadway, essentially giving birth to the “adult musical.”
