The Wright State women’s basketball team returned to postseason play for the fifth straight as they played at Toledo March 16 in the first round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Raiders fell to the Rockets 64-50.
Junior Emily Vogelpohl led the Raiders with 13 points, six rebounds and four steals while Symone Simmons finished with 10 points and seven boards. Freshman Tyler Frierson came off the bench for six points and seven rebounds.
Wright State ended the season at 23-11, the fifth season in a row with 20-plus wins. The Raiders have posted a 48-20 record in two years under head coach Katrina Merriweather with two WNIT bids.
First half highlights
- The Rockets jumped out early and held the lead throughout the half, up 18-11 after the first quarter and 34-22 at the half.
- Vogelpohl had five points while Simmons had four points and four rebounds. Frierson came off the bench for four points.
- The Raiders shot 26 percent from the field, hitting nine of 35 as UT shot 45 percent (13-29).
- Wright State had only three turnovers but were outrebounded 23-20.
Second half highlights
- Toledo continued to dominate and led 51-32 after three quarters though the Raiders outscored the Rockets in the final 10 minutes 18-13.
- The Raiders had three threes in the game that all came in the second half.
- Wright State went nine of 33 from the field in the last period.
- UT outrebounded Wright State 25-20.
