Texas two-step

Fresh off its third Horizon League championship in program history, the Wright State women’s basketball team earned the No. 13 seed and will take on No. 4 seed Arkansas in the opening round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

The Raiders will play the Razorbacks on Monday, March 22, at 2 p.m. in the first round as part of the Alamo Region. The game will air on ESPN.

The entire 2021 NCAA Championship will be played in a neutral-site format in the San Antonio area.

The Raiders learned their opponent on March 15 in front of dozens of family, friends, alumni and local media who gathered in the Wright State Nutter Center to watch ESPN’s live Selection Show.

About 20 minutes into the ESPN broadcast the Raiders were announced, and the players and coaches’ celebration and dancing appeared on national television.

“It’s something that you can’t take for granted,” said head coach Katrina Merriweather. “A lot of people coach and play this game and they don’t get an opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament.”

The Raiders secured a trip to the NCAA Tournament with a 53-41 win over IUPUI in the 2021 Horizon League Championship game.

Wright State enters the NCAA Championship with an 18–7 overall record, winning its second Horizon League Tournament title in the last three seasons, while Arkansas is 19–8.
