Wright State University celebrated the installation of a new multicultural sorority chapter, Kappa Phi Lambda, during a special event on April 15 in the Student Union Atrium.

Around 100 people including representatives of other Greek organizations at Wright State watched nine new charter members introduce themselves to the campus community.

“This is the first time that we’ve brought in a multicultural sorority,” said Gina Keucher, program director for Student Involvement and Leadership.

Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority is an Asian interest, but not Asian exclusive organization, dedicated to providing service, promoting academic excellence and raising cultural awareness on college campuses.

“It’s been a wild ride,” said Kate Jones, a senior majoring in media studies and new Kappa Phi Lambda member. “We’ve worked really hard to get here so I’m really proud of all of us.”

As a member of ACE-Advocates for Cultural Diversity and Excellence, Jones and other students chose to charter Kappa Phi Lambda because of its dedication to sisterhood, service and cultural diversity. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the sorority installment, which began in 2018.

Keucher said that many students are trying to find their place at Wright State. “This gives especially students from different cultures a place where they find their home,” said Keucher.
