The author of a historical novel about Katharine Wright, sister of flight pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright, will visit Wright State University on Monday, April 14.
International bestseller Tracey Enerson Wood will give a talk about “Katharine, the Wright Sister” at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room. Wood’s talk is open to the public.
“Katharine, The Wright Sister” shines a light on the mastermind behind her brothers’ famous invention, the airplane. The book delves into the incredible risks and sacrifices of a family devoted to each other and their dream.
It is the fourth novel by Wood, who enjoys discovering amazing women whose stories have been lost to history and bringing them to life for today’s readers.
“Choosing to write ‘Katharine, the Wright Sister’ was a combination of my fascination and family history in aviation, the thrill of uncovering another unheralded woman in history and in no small part due to the setting of Dayton, Ohio,” said Wood. “As Dayton is my husband’s hometown, and my adopted hometown as well, I have many fond memories of spending holidays there and enjoying coming back for visits still.”
Wright State’s Special Collections and Archives, which has the most complete collection of archival Wright family material in the world, provided critical information and photos during Woods’ research for the book.
“I’m so pleased to be returning to chat about it,” she said.
Wood’s previous novel, “The President’s Wife,” tells the tale of Edith Bolling Wilson and her whirlwind romance and marriage to Woodrow Wilson. Her debut novel, “The Engineer’s Wife,” is based on Emily Warren Roebling, the woman who completed the Brooklyn Bridge despite tremendous obstacles. Wood is also the author of “The War Nurse,” the story of Julia Stimson and her nurses in France during World War I.
While working as a registered nurse and later running her own interior design company, Wood indulged in her passion for writing. She penned numerous award-winning plays, wrote a monthly health column for a national magazine, reviewed restaurants for several local magazines and wrote two screenplays. She currently resides near Tampa, Florida.
Copies of “Katharine, the Wright Sister” will be available for purchase following the book talk and will be signed by Wood.
