New works and Broadway favorites highlight Wright State’s 2025–26 theatre and dance season

Audiences can expect a season rich with laughter, suspense, heart and history as Wright State University’s 2025–26 theatre and dance lineup showcases both new works and beloved classics.

“In a season featuring stories of coming of age, romance, perseverance, as well as writing and teaching history, audiences will experience work that will delight, challenge and hopefully inspire,” said Marya Spring Cordes, professor of acting and musical theatre and artistic director of Wright State Theatre.

“The Game’s Afoot,” Sept. 26–Oct. 5, Festival Playhouse
This murderous comedy blends mystery and high hilarity. When a guest at a holiday gathering is stabbed to death, a festive evening in an isolated mansion turns deadly. Directed by Josh Aaron McCabe, associate professor of acting and head of the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting program.

“Concord Floral,” Oct. 24–Nov. 2, Herbst Studio Theatre
In an abandoned greenhouse turned teenage hideout, a dark secret is uncovered—one that sets off a chain of haunting events. This contemporary coming-of-age story is both lyrical and chilling. Directed by guest artist Gina Handy Minyard, artistic director of Magnolia Theatre Company.

“The Wedding Singer,” November 13–23, Festival Playhouse
Based on the hit film, this musical transports audiences to the big-haired, big-hearted 1980s. A lovable wedding singer finds love where he least expects it in this high-energy romantic comedy. Directed by Jamie Cordes, senior lecturer of acting, with music direction by Wade Russo, instructor of musical theatre, and choreography by Ashley Pabst, instructor of dance.

“Only in New York,” Feb. 13–22, Herbst Studio Theatre
In this heartfelt, soulful new musical written for Wright State by theatre alum Ronvé O’Daniel, Kenya, a mother, wife and aspiring mixologist, navigates the chaos of New York City while chasing her dreams. Featuring a dynamic score blending R&B, hip-hop and musical theatre, “Only in New York” explores identity, parenthood and mental health. Directed by Marya Spring Cordes, professor of acting and musical theatre and Wright State Theatre’s artistic director, with music direction by Matt Ebright, School of Fine and Performing Arts staff music director.

“The History Boys,” Feb. 20–March 1, Festival Playhouse
This collegiate regional premiere follows a group of sharp, unruly British boarding school boys and their very different teachers. Witty, moving and thought-provoking, “The History Boys” explores the nature of education and the power of history. Winner of the 2006 Tony Award for Best Play. Directed by guest artist Jason Podplesky.

“1776,” March 26–April 5, Festival Playhouse
A bold reimagining of the birth of America, “1776” humanizes the nation’s founders as they struggle, debate and compromise to declare independence. Timely, relevant, and full of heart. Directed and choreographed by Greg Hellems, head of musical theatre, with music direction by Wade Russo, instructor of musical theatre.

Spring Dance Concert, April 23–26, Festival Playhouse
Wright State’s Dance Ensemble presents its most dynamic concert of the year, featuring new works by faculty Gina Walther, head of dance, Ashley Pabst, instructor of dance, and guest artists. The concert will also include community partners Dayton Ballet II and Dayton Contemporary Dance Company II.

Wright State and Human Race Theatre Special Collaboration:
“Hay Fever,” April 2026, Loft Theatre, Dayton
In this comedy of theatrical chaos, Judith and David Bliss retreat to their country home for a peaceful weekend, only to be joined by their children and an uninvited gaggle of eccentric guests. Misunderstandings, egos and mayhem ensue.
