Beginning Thursday, Nov. 13, Wright State theatre fans, would-be wedding singers and musical lovers in general can watch the university’s adaptation of “The Wedding Singer.”
Across its nine performances over eight days, the production will feature the talents of what director Jaime Cordes says is “truly the future talent of musical theatre.”
The show is, of course, based on the 1998 film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.
The musical is in love with the ‘80s, featuring plenty of tunes familiar to fans of that era. If you’re unfamiliar with the movie, the story follows wedding singer Robbie, who is left heartbroken after being left at the altar. Fortunately for him, he develops a love for music and finds new love in more ways than one.
“I feel like ‘The Wedding Singer’ at this point is something we really need,” Cordes says. “It’s a heartfelt story.”
“It’s a great show, full of laughs and ’80s magic,” says David Cremean, who plays Robbie.
Playing characters of the ‘80s is something that Gavin O’Meara — who plays Robbie’s best friend George — and Cremean had a lot of fun researching.
They each listened to music of that era and Cremean even kept a playlist of ’80s songs and learned some guitar to get into the headspace of his character as well.
