Few individuals have made as immediate and enduring an impact on Wright State University’s teacher education program as Dave Herick.

Herick has been a cornerstone of the Department of Teacher Education since 2007, when he joined Wright State as the university’s first hybrid educator, serving on loan from his school district. He later transitioned into an adjunct instructor role before joining the faculty full-time in 2021.

Since then, Herick has played a key leadership role in the department — a commitment that earned him the 2024–25 Presidential Award for Outstanding Non-Tenure Eligible Faculty: Service.

A proud Wright State alumnus, Herick brought with him more than three decades of classroom and leadership experience in local schools. In his first year as a full-time faculty member, he was appointed program director for elementary education. By 2023, he had expanded his responsibilities to also lead the middle childhood education program, managing both while continuing to teach, mentor and support future educators.

Known for his commitment to service and student success, Herick has led efforts that strengthened the department’s academic offerings and professional development initiatives. He played a key role in securing and implementing Science of Reading grants that enhanced the curriculum. He also organized impactful events like the Literacy Launch Conferences and the Math Passion Project Expo, creating valuable learning and networking opportunities for students and educators.

Herick’s influence reaches beyond Wright State. He serves on the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s P–8 Standards Panel, where his contributions have helped position Wright State as a leader in teacher preparation reform.

“I have witnessed first-hand Mr. Herick’s unwavering dedication to service, leadership and mentorship within the Department of Teacher Education and across the broader university community,” said Marty Sexton, Ph.D., dean of the College of Health, Education and Human Services. “His remarkable contributions to program development, student support and community engagement exemplify the highest standards of service.”

A proud Wright State alumnus, Herick holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and business, a teaching certification in elementary education, a master’s degree in educational leadership and a licensure in educational leadership. He is also a dedicated supporter of Wright State basketball.

Colleagues and students alike praise Herick not only for his accomplishments but also for his approachable and supportive leadership style. He is known for creating a collaborative environment where students feel encouraged and faculty feel empowered.

Through his efforts, Herick has helped solidify Wright State’s reputation as a destination for outstanding teacher preparation.
