Wright State outlook revised to positive by Moody’s, reflecting further confidence in the university

Independent assessment recognizes the university’s disciplined financial management and stable operations, as well as its ability to navigate future challenges

Moody’s Investors Service has revised Wright State University’s outlook to positive from stable while affirming its A2 issuer and debt ratings, reflecting continued progress in enrollment growth, financial performance and strategic partnerships.

This is the fourth positive ratings action Wright State has received in the last five years. Moody’s upgraded the university’s rating from Baa2 to Baa1 in 2021, from Baa1 to A3 in 2023 and from A3 to A2 in 2024. The revised positive outlook marks another step in that progression.

Moody’s Ratings, a global credit rating agency, provides independent assessments of credit risk and evaluates the financial strength and creditworthiness of organizations worldwide.

The outlook revision follows Moody’s assessment of Wright State’s financial profile, governance practices and operating environment. Moody’s considers a range of factors when evaluating an organization’s credit outlook, including its financial position, management practices and ability to navigate changing conditions.

The positive outlook recognizes Wright State’s success in strengthening its position in a challenging higher education environment through disciplined financial management, growing student demand and innovative partnerships with regional employers and healthcare organizations. Moody’s cited the university’s improving enrollment trends, affordable market position and demonstrated ability to adapt its operating model to support long-term sustainability.

“Students and families want to know that the university they have chosen is academically excellent, financially strong and positioned for long-term success,” said Wright State University President Sue Edwards. “Moody’s decision to revise our outlook from stable to positive reinforces confidence in Wright State’s financial trajectory. That stability allows the university to advance our mission of serving the region’s students — not just today, but for generations to come. As one of the Miami Valley’s leading economic drivers, we will continue to prepare our graduates not only to be workforce ready, but also to become leaders in the communities in which they live and work.”

The Moody’s assessment is one of several indicators of Wright State’s financial health.

The university concluded fiscal year 2025 with a Senate Bill 6 composite score of 5.0, the highest score possible under Ohio’s financial health reporting system for public universities. This was the third consecutive year Wright State received a score of 5.0.

“Together, these independent assessments reflect the stability Wright State has built and its ability to move forward with confidence as higher education continues to evolve,” said Greg Sample, executive vice president and chief operating officer. “The positive outlook recognizes the progress we have made and the thoughtful decisions that have strengthened our position. It allows us to remain focused on aligning resources with the needs of our students and communities as we continue moving Wright State in the right direction.”

Andy Platt, chair of Wright State’s Finance, Audit, Governance and Compliance Committee, highlighted the thoughtful work of Wright State’s administration and the importance of strong financial stewardship in supporting the university’s continued progress.

“Moody’s recognition reflects years of careful work by the administration in partnership with the Board of Trustees to strengthen Wright State’s financial position,” Platt said. “The Finance Committee remains committed to responsible oversight and sound financial stewardship that supports the university’s long-term strength and sustainability.”

Raj Kejriwal, chair of the Wright State Board of Trustees, said the positive outlook reflects confidence in the university’s direction and future.

“Moody’s positive outlook affirms the remarkable progress Wright State has made and the clear direction the university is heading,” said Kejriwal. “As a leading higher education institution in the region, Wright State plays a vital role in serving thousands of students, supporting workforce development and contributing to the communities we call home. The Board of Trustees remains committed to providing strategic governance and oversight as Wright State expands opportunities for students and builds on this momentum.”
