Earth Day every day this week at Wright State

Earth Day may be Friday, April 22, but environmentally minded students, faculty and staff at Wright State University will begin celebrating early.

“There’s really a bunch of stuff going on and it’s both heartening and encouraging,” said Linda Ramey, Ph.D., environmental science education.

Ramey says interest in Earth Day, and the environmentally friendly lifestyle choices that come with it, have been building momentum on campus.

“Three years ago, there were a couple of things but I don’t think there was as much emphasis in the getting the word out,” said Ramey.

Many of this year’s activities will involve physically getting out of the classroom or office and interacting with nature on campus.

Activities include:

Monday, April 18, Noon—Walk in the Wright State Woods to look for spring wildflowers and check out the bird blind.  Meet at the Earth Day flag where Loop Road intersects with University Blvd.

Tuesday, April 19, 12:30 p.m.—Bring your lunch and join us for an Earth Day video clip and walk to the garden area with the Wright State Environmental Action Group (EAG). To participate, meet at 382 Allyn Hall.

Wednesday, April 20, 9:00 a.m.—Walk in the Wright State Woods to look for spring wildflowers and check out the bird blind. Meet at the Earth Day flag where Loop Road intersects with University Blvd.

Thursday, April 21, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.—Join the Office of Sustainability for pizza and an Earth Day video in 264 Brehm Lab.

Friday, April 22, 3:45 p.m.—Celebrate Earth Day 2011 and walk in the Wright State Woods, starting from the first floor lobby of Russ Engineering.

Most events will simultaneously also allow students to participate in recycling efforts and litter cleanup of some areas on campus.

Check out the Dunbar Library’s ongoing sustainability efforts at the recycling display in the main library atrium for more information.

Stacey Hundley, Ph.D., Earth and Environmental Sciences, is also organizing an Earth Day 2011 on-campus photo competition with the Students in Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES).  Send photos to Bill McIntire at william.mcintire@wright.edu to participate.

The SEES group is also planning a tree planting and other events to celebrate Earth Day 2011.
