College of Engineering and Computer Science prepares for Senior Design Showcase

The College of Engineering and Computer Science’s Senior Design Showcase takes place April 29 from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m.

Seniors in Wright State University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) are working toward the second annual Senior Design Showcase and Student Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 29.

The showcase takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Endeavour Room in the Student Union, followed by the awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m. in the Apollo Room.

The showcase will feature the top projects created by CECS students during Senior Design, a two-semester capstone course. The teams will be evaluated by three industry judges who will select one winning team and two honorable mention teams. Teams will receive cash prizes.

A Disaster Data and Tagging Application program or DDATA, is among one of the projects created for the competition. The program was created by computer science majors Cogan Shimizu, Ryan Barrer, Sean Gibbons, Maxx Myers and Jace Robinson.

“This program is meant to be deployed during a large-scale disaster, such as an earthquake or wildfire,” Shimizu said. “DDATA will scour Twitter in that location for references to smaller incidents and will attempt to notify the authorities of the people involved, the nature of the incident, and whether or not multiple people are reporting the same problem. We hope to save time, energy and lives by helping first responders prioritize information coming in from the field.”

Each program in the college will be represented in the showcase. Programs include: biomedical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, materials science and engineering and mechanical engineering.

“It is a great achievement in that our ideas have been validated and found to be worthy of display and perhaps further refinement,” said Shimizu. “It is a great honor in that we have been chosen to publicly represent the department with our work.”

“It’s a wonderful way to wrap up the year,” said Ann Wright, the event coordinator. “We have a whole afternoon of events planned, the Senior Design Showcase, the Student Awards Ceremony and the Order of the Engineer.”

Wright advises seniors to come prepared and on time, communicate effectively, dress professionally and put their best foot forward.
