The future of financial planning — including investing for Millennials and digital financial advice — will be some highlight topics addressed by leaders in the industry at the third annual LIFT2 Symposium hosted by Wright State University.
LIFT2 (Leading Innovation in Finance Today and Tomorrow) will be held Friday, March 24, in the Student Union from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
It is expected to attract hundreds of financial planning professionals from as far away as Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis.
“It’s an exciting program,” said co-coordinator Marlena Akhbari, associate professor and chair of finance in Wright State’s Raj Soin College of Business. “We like to have current topics that are cutting-edge, things that are on people’s minds. And we’ve attracted nationally recognized speakers who are the best of the best.”
Keynote speakers are Joseph Maugeri, managing director of corporate relations for the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards; and Doug Lennick, CEO and co-founder of think2perform, a professional coaching, leadership consulting and business development company.
Lennick will discuss the wealth-health connection or as he puts it, “from misery to wisdom.” Maugeri will discuss the industry’s response to the explosion of digital advice.
Alan Moore from the XY Planning Network will speak about investing for Millennials.
“There are a lot of firms all over this nation that would like to figure out what this guy has figured out,” said Akhbari. “When you’ve got people in their 20s and 30s already saving, they will automatically be your high-worth individuals in the future.”
The symposium’s target audience are client-facing professionals in the financial-services industry — financial planners, insurance professionals, foundation officials, bankers, asset managers and accountants. Many of them are Wright State alums. But the symposium is also for Wright State finance and financial planning students and those from other universities.
“We want to make sure that the symposium addresses a broad array of topics timely and important to the full gamut of financial services professionals,” said Bill Wood, senior lecturer and coordinator of Wright State’s financial services degree program. “The idea is to create something of a high quality that it is good for the industry and good for our students. It’s a win-win situation. Our students are able to listen to these industry leaders speak and at the end of the day network with a variety of professionals.”
Other sessions include “How to Keep Medicare from Ruining my Clients’ Retirement” by Katy Votava; “Complex Cases in Tax and Insurance” by David Houston; “Financial Planning for Divorce and its Complexities” by Jeffrey Rattiner; “Why the Term ‘Free Online Retirement Tool’ Should Raise Concerns for Both Consumer and Adviser” by Barry Mulholland; and “The Evolution of Banking: Where are We and Where are We Going?” by Timothy M. Walsh.
