Dayton Business Journal: Wright State gets $3M gift for engineering labs

Wright State University has received a $3 million gift from an alumni to benefit its engineering programs. The gift is tied for the largest the school has ever received from an alumni. Ron Bullock, a 1970 graduate who is now chairman of Bison Gear & Engineering Corp. in St. Charles, Ill., has committed the funding to create new lab space for Wright State’s engineering students.

“I’ve always liked working with my hands,” Bullock said. “Manufacturers are uniquely positioned to innovation, and having a space where the engineering students can collaborate and think outside the box will help drive the needle forward.”

“I looked at this as an investment in helping manufacturing fill the human capital pipeline,” said Bullock, the chairman of Bison Gear & Engineering Corp. in St. Charles, Ill. “At this laboratory, people can come and turn their ideas into physical products.”

The gift will provide for a new laboratory named for Bullock’s company, as well as a new engineering and design faculty position. The lab, designed to promote creative thinking and problem solving in various engineering disciplines, is scheduled to open in fall 2016, according to Nathan Klingbeil, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

“We’re using a term we developed at Bison in establishing an innopreneurship laboratory which will be a place where people can bring their ideas and turn them into physical products,” said Bullock.

Bullock, a graduate of Fairview High School, said he credits Fairview and Wright State University for giving him a lifelong love of learning.
