Be dazzled

A night of African food, music and dancing took place at the fourth annual Sapphire Jubilee in the Wright State University Student Union Endeavour Room on Sept. 23.

The event is the signature fundraiser for the African American Alumni Society Scholarship and supports the mission of the Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center and its program fund.

“Many of our students come to Wright State because it is an economical choice and many stay because of the scholarships that they are given here,” said Bing Bingham, alumni relations officer in the Office of Alumni Relations.

The event was previously held in the Berry Room in the Wright State Nutter Center, but this year’s event celebrated the Bolinga Center’s new location at 019 Student Union and offered tours throughout the evening.

During the ceremony, the Carolyn E. Wright Award was presented to Tonya Mathis and the African American Alumni Society Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Charlotte Harris, Ph.D.

The Sapphire Jubilee was sponsored by the Wright State Alumni Association’s African American Alumni Society and other community sponsors and stakeholders. This year’s event raised over $7,000 for the African American Society Scholarship.
