For 12 hours, they danced, played games, cheered on Miracle Kids and pushed through the final moments on tired feet. When the final numbers were revealed at midnight Saturday, it made every moment of Wright State University’s dance marathon worth it.
Raiderthon raised more than $59,000 for Dayton Children’s Hospital, the second-highest total in the event’s 13-year history — pushing its cumulative total to more than $600,000.
“When the final fundraising total is revealed, it’s an emotional and celebratory moment,” said Alyssa Zizelman, a physiology and neuroscience major who serves as executive director of Miracle Makers, the student organization behind the event. “Everyone comes together to see the impact of their hard work over the past year, and it’s truly unforgettable.”
Held March 28 in the Student Union’s Apollo Room on Wright State’s Dayton Campus, Raiderthon drew approximately 100 participants.
The event’s signature moment came when six “Miracle Kids” and their families took the stage to share their stories.
“One of the most meaningful moments each year is hearing from Miracle Families and seeing the direct impact of our efforts,” said Alyssa Zizelman, a physiology and neuroscience major who serves as executive director of Miracle Makers. “It’s a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.”
Throughout the 12-hour marathon, students kept spirits high through musical chairs, lip-sync battles, Zumba, a “pie in the face” fundraiser and a “Time Out Corner” challenge. The night closed with a silent disco, a rave hour and the midnight reveal.
Funds raised are donated to Dayton Children’s Hospital to support critical programs, life-saving treatments, equipment and patient care initiatives, with an emphasis on reducing barriers for families with the greatest financial need.
Raiderthon sponsors included 7 Brew, Marion’s Pizza, Walmart, Sam’s Club and Nothing Bundt Cakes.
