Dayton Business Journal: Wright State receives positive Moody’s rating, pointing to strong financial standing for the college

Wright State University has received a positive grading from a respected independent credit agency, pointing to a healthy financial standing for the university.

Wright State was recently upgraded from a stable grade to positive by Moody’s Ratings, a global credit rating agency that provides independent assessments of credit risk and evaluates the financial strength and creditworthiness of organizations worldwide. The revision also affirmed the college’s current A2 credit rating.

The scale used for Moody’s Ratings range from C, the lowest rating pointing to a higher credit risk, to Aaa, the highest grade an organization can receive and pointing to a low credit risk. An A2 rating is the third highest grade out of the 21-grade scale an organization can receive.

This marks the fourth positive ratings action Wright State has received in the last five years. Moody’s upgraded the university’s rating from Baa2 to Baa1 in 2021, from Baa1 to A3 in 2023 and from A3 to A2 in 2024. This most recent revised positive outlook marks another step in that progression.

The positive review from Moody’s reflects continued progress in enrollment growth, financial performance and strategic partnerships at Wright State.

“Together, these independent assessments reflect the stability Wright State has built and its ability to move forward with confidence as higher education continues to evolve,” said Greg Sample, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Wright State. “The positive outlook recognizes the progress we have made and the thoughtful decisions that have strengthened our position. It allows us to remain focused on aligning resources with the needs of our students and communities as we continue moving Wright State in the right direction.”

One of the strategic partnerships that has proved successful is the college’s collaboration with Premier Health. Wright State and Premier Health formed an affiliation agreement in 2021.

Since then, the two have undertaken a plethora of initiatives, such as turning Miami Valley Hospital into an academic medical center, integrating Wright State Physicians into the Premier Physician Network, both establishing and expanding the Premier Health Wright State Nursing Academy and more.
