Boonshoft School of Medicine students learn where they will pursue residency training during nationwide Match Day

One hundred three medical students of the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine learned today where they will spend the next three to five years of their lives completing residency training after receiving their medical degrees in May.

Boonshoft School of Medicine students are sharing 60-second videos of their celebrations online. By sharing them with @wsubsom on Instagram, students enter a contest for the most creative videos. The top three entries will receive Amazon gift cards from the medical school: $150 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place.

A long-standing tradition at medical schools nationwide, Match Day is a highly anticipated occasion. It is the day that medical students learn where they are heading as new doctors to receive advanced clinical training in a residency program. In 2019, more than 38,000 applicants vied for more than 35,000 residency positions at institutions nationwide. The 2020 Match is expected to be even larger.

Depending on where they match, students will spend the next three to five years as residents receiving advanced training in a primary care field or one of dozens of medical specialties. Wright State students matched in outstanding programs in Dayton, throughout Ohio and across the country, including Case Western Reserve/University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic, Duke University, Emory University, Kaiser Permanente, Mayo Clinic, Northwestern University, Wake Forest University and Wright State University.

More than 41 percent of the Wright State graduates will remain in Ohio during residency, and 10 percent will remain in Dayton.

More than a third (50.5 percent) will enter a primary care field (Family Medicine: 11.7 percent; Internal Medicine: 27.2 percent; and Pediatrics: 11.7 percent).

The rest matched in 12 other specialties: Anesthesiology: 5.8 percent; Dermatology: 3.9 percent; Emergency Medicine: 9.7 percent; Neurology: 3.9 percent; Obstetrics and Gynecology: 4.9 percent; Ophthalmology: 1.0 percent; Orthopaedic Surgery: 6.8 percent; Pathology: 1.0 percent; Psychiatry: 7.8 percent; Radiology: 1.0 percent; Surgery: 8.7 percent; and Urology: 1.9 percent.
