Leaders of 10 Black student organizations at Wright State University will hold a series of events to promote opportunities for students and Black culture on campus.
The first Virtual Black Welcome Week takes place Aug. 31 to Sept. 4. It includes virtual social and academic events, as well as presentations by student organizations on how to join and leadership opportunities available to students.
“This week was organized to spark interest in ALL students from Wright State. We hope to open students up to campus culture of Black Wright State and what opportunities it has to offer,” said Jeffrey Shehee, vice president of the Black Student Union and a public health major.
Shehee said the Black Student Union organized Virtual Black Welcome Week because “no one else is there to support the Black community. It is important that we have student leaders who look to uplift incoming and current students all over campus to achieve at the best of their abilities.”
He also encouraged faculty and staff to get involved.
“After the recent happenings of events this year, having support from the Wright State staff and faculty is crucial, especially in the sense that they recognize and educate themselves about Black issues,” Shehee said.
Student organizations involved in the week of events include: the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, African American Residential Caucus, African Student Union, Association of Black Business Students, Black Women Striving Forward, Black Men on the Move, In His Presence Ministries, National Society of Black Engineers, Black Student Union and chapters from the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
