Works by more than 30 artists from across the country will be featured in the Drawing from Perception VII exhibition at Wright State University’s Robert & Elaine Stein Galleries from Jan. 13 through Feb. 24.

Begun in 1996 by Wright State Art and Art History faculty, Drawing from Perception VII is a recurring juried show focusing on the discipline of drawing from observation. Noted New York Studio School teacher and artist Stanley Lewis served as this year’s juror.

Drawing from Perception VII captures the variety of subjects and techniques available to contemporary artists who are concerned with drawing from direct observation. Lewis’ choices effectively illustrate just how varied the discipline of drawing can be.

Selected works range from small-scale watercolors to large charcoal drawings, encompassing subjects from the artist’s own portraits to land and cityscapes. Some artists work in a very controlled manner, observing minute details about their subject and surroundings. Others work gesturally, creating an impression of their environment.

Showing concurrently in the Entrance Gallery, Stanley Lewis: Works on Paper is an intimate look at the juror’s own energetic drawings. Lewis’ career spans more than 40 years, beginning with his studies at Yale and leading to a successful career as a teacher and painter. He lives and continues to work in Massachusetts and is a member of the Betty Cuningham Gallery in New York City.

On Sunday, Jan. 13, Lewis will present a free public lecture at 2:30 p.m. in M252 of the Creative Arts Center. A reception will follow until 5:30 p.m. in the Stein Galleries, located in A132 Creative Arts Center.

The exhibition is made possible with support by the Ohio Arts Council, the Friends and Members of the Galleries and the Wright State University College of Liberal Arts.

Gallery hours are Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. All Galleries events are free and open to the public.
