Wright State STEMM Scholars Recognized at Ohio Showcase Event

More than 500 Choose Ohio First scholarship recipients—including some from Wright State University–were recognized for their achievements during the STEMM Scholar Showcase and had the opportunity to meet with potential employers.

The Jan. 23 event at COSI in Columbus was hosted by the Ohio Board of Regents.

About 430 scholars are graduating in the fourth year of this program.

“This is a great opportunity for students to network with potential employers and to seek out internships,” Chancellor Jim Petro said. “For those graduating scholars, we congratulate them and encourage them to accept jobs in Ohio.”

Choose Ohio First scholarships are awarded to students who are studying in fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM). Scholarship awards range from $1,500 to $5,200 per student, per academic year.

During the past four years, more than $60 million has been allocated for scholarships and has leveraged more than $32 million in matching funds from Ohio colleges and universities and their business partners.

Choose Ohio First scholarships have been awarded to more than 4,000 students in 28 programs involving 41 Ohio public and private institutions during the past four years.

According to a report by the Center on Education and the Workforce, 8 million new jobs will be available in STEMM-related fields by 2018.

The Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program is part of the state’s strategic effort to significantly strengthen Ohio’s position in global markets such as aerospace, medicine, computer technology and energy.

Secretary of State Jon Husted was instrumental in writing, introducing and passing the legislation that established the Choose Ohio First Scholarship program for STEMM students while a member of the legislature.

During the showcase event, Husted stressed the importance of college and business partnerships and encouraged students and businesses to work together for the betterment of Ohio’s economy.

Several scholars displayed their research projects, networked with businesses and connected with Ohio Means Jobs representatives. Ohio legislators and leaders were also in attendance to personally congratulate STEMM Scholars.

The main goal, however, was to connect businesses with these highly coveted students who have earned degrees in or are studying in STEMM fields. More than 20 businesses and organizations associated with the Choose Ohio First program took part in the event.

During the program, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Director Michael Colbert announced the release of a new OhioMeansJobs.com phone application that will give Ohioans access to tens of thousands of job openings and enable users to search, save and even apply for jobs from their iPhone, iPad or Android.

In addition, Chancellor Petro and Director Colbert unveiled the OhioMeansInternships.com website that will promote awareness of Ohio higher education internship opportunities and provide information useful during the students’ educational planning.
