Local universities all have seen community service rates among students and faculty on the rise. David Hopkins, Wright State University president, says it is ingrained in his school’s history, with 9,000 WSU students participating in 930,000 hours of community service during the last school year.
“It has been the very essence of Wright State from the beginning because we came from a grassroots movement to have a four-year public university that would be committed to engaging in the community,” Hopkins said. “We really encourage students to give back to the community.”
Senior Molly Early, who studies early childhood education, was one of the thousands of Wright State volunteers who devoted time to a local community group last year.
