Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine class of 2014 participates in national Match Day event

Boonshoft School of Medicine students join thousands nationwide in learning where they will pursue residency training

One hundred and three graduating medical students in the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine learned today where they will spend the next three to five years of their lives completing their residency training after receiving their medical degrees in May.

A longstanding tradition at medical schools, Match Day is a highly anticipated event. It is the day that medical students learn where they are heading as new doctors to receive advanced clinical training in a residency program.

Surrounded by friends and family in the Student Union’s Apollo Room, each student anxiously awaited for his or her envelope to be drawn from a hopper by Dean Marjorie Bowman, M.D.

The Wright State students were among more than 17,000 graduating medical students who participated in the annual rite of passage known as The Match in ceremonies at medical schools nationwide.

Depending on where they match, students will spend the next three to five years as residents receiving advanced training in a primary care field or one of dozens of medical specialties.

Wright State students matched in outstanding programs in Dayton, throughout Ohio and across the country, including Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic, Duke University, the Mayo Clinic and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Almost half (45.6 percent) of the Wright State graduates will remain in Ohio during residency, and 20.3 percent will remain in the Dayton area. Close to half (48.5 percent) will enter a primary care field (family medicine: 8.7 percent; internal medicine: 15.5 percent; internal medicine/pediatrics: 1 percent; internal medicine-psychiatry: 1 percent; pediatrics: 22.3 percent).

The rest matched in 14 other specialties: anesthesiology: 2.9 percent; dermatology: 2.9 percent; emergency medicine: 6.8 percent; neurology: 1.9 percent; obstetrics and gynecology: 3.9 percent; ophthalmology: 2.9 percent; orthopaedic surgery: 3.9 percent; otolaryngology: 2.9 percent; pathology: 1.9 percent; physical medicine and rehabilitation: 4.9 percent; plastic surgery: 1 percent; psychiatry: 2.9 percent; radiology: 3.9 percent; and surgery: 8.7 percent.
