Boonshoft School of Medicine offers three new certificate programs in global health, public healthThe Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine is offering three new graduate certificate programs in addition to its Health Care Management Certificate Program this fall semester.

The three new programs are in global health, public health emergency preparedness and public health leadership. Classes begin on Monday, Aug. 29.

The Global Health Certificate Program is for graduate students who want to acquire skills and a broad-based knowledge in global health. Global health is interdisciplinary, involving political, cultural, economic and environmental considerations that affect the health of communities and individuals worldwide. The goal of global health is to promote population health, safety and well-being, and to eliminate health and social disparities worldwide. Global health professionals develop innovative solutions to challenging health problems, particularly in resource-limited environments. The certificate program also offers a global health practicum. This practicum includes an international experience through participation in one of the internships offered by Child Family Health International.

The Health Care Management Certificate Program is for graduate students who want to develop strategic management and leadership skills. The program, which is cosponsored by the Wright State Raj Soin College of Business and the Boonshoft School of Medicine, introduces participants to advanced business concepts, evaluation techniques and strategic thinking so they can lead effectively, improve quality, increase productivity and better manage organizational costs. The program is designed for physicians, managers, nurses and other health care providers and administrators.

The Public Health Emergency Preparedness Certificate Program is for graduate students who want to gain a better understanding of emergency management systems and learn about critical thinking skills applicable to public health, hospital, pre-hospital and emergency management systems. This program will provide education in consequence and crisis management of disaster impacts, analyses of planning and coordination that support public health emergency/medical readiness systems and examination of policies that impact emergency preparedness. The program is designed for health care professionals, public health workforce members, community leaders and first responders.

The Public Health Leadership Certificate Program is for graduate students who want to develop advanced competencies in strategy, leadership and organizational effectiveness. In addition, those who complete the program will gain a working knowledge of administrative principles necessary in public health and related professional settings. They will have the ability to focus their study in budgeting, ethics, communications, grant writing, management and/or marketing. This program is designed for health system and health plan administrators, health department employees, physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.

The Department of Population and Public Health Sciences, formerly the Department of Community Health, at the Boonshoft School of Medicine is offering the four certificate programs. Courses will be taught at the department’s education center at 3123 Research Blvd. in Kettering.
