Baseball sets runs record, wins 32-4

Wright State Raiders crossed the plate a record 32 times against Yougstown State.

The Wright State baseball team set a school record for runs in a game Thursday night, scoring 24 times in the first three innings en route to a 32-4 decision over Youngstown State at Nischwitz Stadium.

After the Penguins scored a run in the first, WSU responded with 10 runs on seven hits in the bottom of the inning.  Tristan Moore started the scoring with a two-run homer to right, Kyle Mossbarger had a three-run double to right and Ryan Ashe hit a three-run single on a full count with the bases loaded to highlight the frame.

The Raiders added five more in the second, including a Jake Hibberd three-run homer to left center and a Corey Davis solo shot to right center, and tacked on nine in the third as Moore and Ashe each had two-run doubles and Justin Kopale smacked a three-run homer to left.

Hibberd hit his second home run of the game, a two-run shot in the fourth, and WSU extended the margin to 30-1 with four in the fifth, including an Ashe three-run triple.  Moore’s second home run of the contest, a two-run blast to left, rounded out the Raider scoring in the seventh.

The 32 runs eclipse the previous WSU record of 26, which was reached on three different occasions, including a 26-5 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Air Force on March 10, 2007.

Ashe finished with four hits and nine RBI for the contest while Hibberd had four hits, six RBI and five runs scored, Moore three hits, six RBI and six runs scored, Kopale three hits and five RBI and Mossbarger three hits, three RBI and five runs scored.

On the mound, Lee Valencheck (1-3) held Youngstown State to a run and three hits over five innings while Vinny Galiardi and David Deliz each pitched two innings.

Wright State (17-10, 8-2), now winners of eight straight and 11 of its last 12, continues the series with the Penguins with a single game Friday starting at 6:30.
