Wright State introduces seven new or restructured undergraduate degrees

Students can now prepare for careers in engineering technology, environmental studies, health sciences, exercise science and agriculture through seven new or restructured degrees offered at Wright State University.

The new undergraduate degrees are designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in high-demand careers in the region.

The programs include new bachelor’s degrees in engineering technology and environmental studies.

Wright State also restructured five existing undergraduate degrees health sciences, exercise science, agriculture and interdisciplinary studies.

New undergraduate degrees:

Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology

The new Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology will equip students with the applied skills and knowledge needed for technical careers.

Offered by the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology provides students an interdisciplinary foundation in mechanical, electrical and industrial engineering and technology. Students can also specialize in one of two focus areas: industrial and systems engineering or electrical engineering.

The program will prepare students for careers in various engineering or other technical areas including automated manufacturing, quality control, product development and design, field service engineering and systems engineering.

The program will appeal to associate degree graduates including students from Sinclair Community College and the Community College of the Air Force.

A significant portion of the program can be completed online to serve a nontraditional student population.

Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies

The new Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies responds to needs expressed by local employers in business, government and the nonprofit sector for employees with skills in policy, ethics, communications, leadership, critical reasoning and creativity.

Designed collaboratively by the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science and Mathematics, the environmental studies degree provides students with a foundation in understanding scientific, human and cultural factors in environmental systems and issues.

The degree program will prepare students for careers in environmental management, law, education, public policy, communications, conservation and environmental restoration planning.

Restructured degree programs:

Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science
Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences

The Department of Kinesiology and Health will offer two new structured programs — Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences — to replace the Bachelor of Science in Education in Sports Science.

The new bachelor’s degree in exercise science will incorporate classroom and supervised practical experiences to prepare undergraduate students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to work as professionals in exercise, health, fitness and wellness fields. Graduates will be eligible to apply for several professional certifications.

The new bachelor’s degree in health science will appeal to students interested in pursuing careers in neuromuscular, musculoskeletal and sports and rehabilitation medicine. The program will incorporate classroom and supervised laboratory and experiential learning opportunities.

Featuring five concentrations, the program will prepare students to pursue graduate degrees in athletic training, occupational therapy, physician assistantship, physical therapy or medicine.

Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies
Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies

The Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies and the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, offered by the College of Liberal Arts, represent a rebranding and restructuring of the bachelor’s degree in liberal studies to meet the needs of students and employers.

The degrees will appeal to nontraditional and working adult students who want to complete an undergraduate degree not tied to a specific field and that can be completed partially or completely online.

Students will learn to become self-starters, think creatively, make ethical decisions, work collaboratively with diverse colleagues and clientele, adapt to change and communicate effectively.

Many certificates and minors can be stacked with the new bachelor’s degrees, including women, gender and sexuality studies; arts management; career advancement skills; diversity and social inequality; geographic information science; national security studies; and crime and justice studies.

Both degrees will prepare students to pursue advanced degrees at Wright State, including the Master of Public Administration, Master of Business Administration, Master of Public Health and Master of Humanities.

Associate of Applied Science in Agriculture

Offered by the Lake Campus, the Associate of Applied Science in Agriculture prepares students for careers in the field of agriculture. Through the study of animal science and agronomic concepts, students will gain a broad base of knowledge of the agriculture field, learn to address real-world challenges and develop effective communication skills.

Graduates of the associate degree in agriculture will be career-ready and may also seamlessly transition into the agriculture concentration of the Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies program at the Lake Campus.

The new associate degree replaces the agriculture concentration in the Associate of Technical Study program.

Undergraduate and Graduate microcredential courses also available:

Wright State also offers more than 20 undergraduate and graduate microcredential courses in a range of fields, including geography, forensics studies, toxicology and engineering.

Wright State’s microcredentials are aligned with competencies needed in the 21st century workforce, including critical thinking, professionalism, intercultural fluency, digital technology and more. The programs are designed to equip students with the skills that employees demand and to help them to communicate those skills in the right setting.

Microcredential courses are designed for students or working professionals who want to learn to upskill or to reskill and develop new skills to shift the focus of their jobs or change careers.

Microcredentials appear on a student’s academic transcript and through a digital badge. They are also stackable toward certificates and degrees. There is no limit to the number of microcredentials that a student can earn.
