Breakthrough sensor research could detect viruses quickly

Technology being developed by Wright State University researchers has the potential to detect new flu viruses at public sites such as airports, immediately alerting health officials to their arrival and reducing the possibility of an outbreak, school officials said.

The National Science Foundation awarded Wright State and several partners a three-year, $625,500 grant to develop new sensor technology that can detect viruses within minutes by measuring their electromagnetic signatures using high-frequency radio waves. The project starts Tuesday and runs through September 2016, with an option for an additional $130,000, officials said.
