How do place, race and history shape social determinants and the contemporary landscape of health outcomes? Why do health outcomes cluster by neighborhood?
To understand the role of these factors in shaping the geography of opportunity and health, the Wright State University Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health and Premier Health will cosponsor a lecture on Thursday, Nov. 19, 5 p.m., in the Theatre Room at 1900 Founders Drive, Miami Valley Research Park in Kettering.
Jason Reece, senior associate director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at The Ohio State University, will speak about “Working Toward Health Equity: Race, Place and History.” Reece will discuss the Kirwan Institute’s role in working with communities to utilize both spatial and historical analysis to intervene in contemporary place-based health challenges.
The Kirwan Institute works in Ohio and nationally to support inclusion and expand access to opportunity for marginalized communities. Reece is an adviser and capacity builder to foundations, nonprofits, community organizations and government agencies on community development, social equity in planning, civic engagement and health equity.
The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the lecture, and registration is encouraged. To RSVP, contact Cyneca Reed by Tuesday, Nov. 17, at cyneca.reed@wright.edu or 937-258-5555.
