Mimi Guarneri, M.D., an international lecturer who is board-certified in cardiovascular disease, internal medicine, nuclear medicine and holistic medicine, will be the featured speaker at the eighth annual Medical-Spirituality Conference on Thursday, April 14.

Sponsored by the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, Premier Health, Hospice of Dayton and The Heart Institute of Dayton, the conference, “The Heart Speaks: An Integrative Approach to Cardiovascular Health,” will begin at 8:45 a.m. and conclude at 4:30 p.m. at the Sinclair Conference Center, 444 W. Third St. in Dayton.

Guarneri is president of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine and the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine. She is senior adviser to the Atlantic Health System for the Center for Well Being and Integrative Medicine. Guarneri also is founder and director of Guarneri Integrative Health Inc.

She earned her medical degree at SUNY Medical Center in New York, where she graduated number one in her class. Guarneri served her internship and residency at Cornell Medical Center and then completed cardiology fellowships at both New York University Medical Center and Scripps Clinic.

Guarneri is the author of “The Heart Speaks,” a poignant collection of stories from heart patients who have benefited from integrative medicine. “The Heart Speaks” and Guarneri’s clinical work were featured in a two-part PBS documentary, “The New Medicine,” on NBC’s “Today Show” and on PBS’s “To the Contrary” and “Full Focus.” “The Heart Speaks” also was optioned for a scripted television series.

She also has authored many articles in professional journals such as the Journal of Echocardiography and the Annals of Internal Medicine, and she is regularly quoted in national publications such as the Yoga Journal, Body+Soul, Trustee magazine and WebMD.

Proceeds from this event will support the Healer’s Art Fund at the Boonshoft School of Medicine. The Healer’s Art Fund was created to help address an emerging crisis in health care: the growing loss of meaning and commitment experienced by physicians nationwide under the stresses of today’s health care system.

Through the Healer’s Art Fund, the Boonshoft School of Medicine helps both students and practicing physicians develop the capacity to find lifelong meaning in the medical profession. The medical school is educating tomorrow’s physicians through its Healer’s Art Course and is sustaining today’s physicians through its annual Medical-Spirituality Conference.
