Lies encircling an all-girls boarding school fuels the engrossing events within Lillian Hellman’s controversial, rarely produced 1934 drama “The Children’s Hour,” which will be presented by Wright State University beginning Thursday, Feb. 2, in the Festival Playhouse of the Creative Arts Center.
Inspired by an 1810 incident at a school in Edinburgh, Scotland, featured in the 1930 true crime anthology “Bad Companions,” the play centers on a student’s vicious lie about her teachers Karen Wright and Martha Dobie, insinuating they were lesbians. In addition to exploring the ensuing consequences of the fib, the play spotlights the psychology of lying and the depths of relationships.
