Wright State, which closed the season at 36-19, posted its most wins in a year since going 36-22 in 2007. Prior to that, the Raiders had not won more than 36 since recording 39 wins in 1994.
The Wright State baseball team saw its season come to an end Saturday afternoon as Arizona broke the game open with six runs in the fourth and went on to a 13-0 decision at the NCAA Regionals in College Station, Texas.
After the Wildcats scored an unearned run in the first, WSU posed a threat to tie the game in the second as Zach Tanner singled up the middle with one out and, one out later, Justin Kopale had a hit to right center to put runners on the corners. Kyle Mossbarger, however, popped out to end the inning.
Arizona (37-20) then used five hits and took advantage of two Raider errors to score six in the fourth and take a 7-0 lead. The Wildcats later added three runs in both the sixth and seventh to round out the scoring.
Sam Picchiotti led the Raider offense with two hits. Jake Hibberd, in his chase for the school record for hits in a season, went 0 for 4 to finish one short of Chris Tuttle’s 97 in 2001.
