Sculptures by Iowa artist Susan Chrysler White featured in Stein Galleries exhibition

The Stein Galleries will open its latest exhibition “Like Oil and Water” with a lecture by the artist Susan Chrysler White on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. in 280 Creative Arts Center.

Highly decorative sculptures by Iowa artist Susan Chrysler White are on display in a new exhibition, “Like Oil and Water,” in Wright State University’s Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries from Oct. 24 to Dec. 8.

White will give a lecture on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 7 p.m. in 280 Creative Arts Center, followed by a reception from 7 to 8 p.m. in the gallery in the Creative Arts Center. All Stein Galleries events are free and open to the public.

White’s most recent sculptures evoke excess, in both scale and their highly decorative nature. Primarily a painter, White seems to turn her paintings inside-out with three-dimensional work by using suspension, Plexiglas and transparent layers of color.

The title of the exhibition, “Like Oil and Water,” White says, “speaks to a tension between seduction and repulsion, beauty and danger, come hither but resist.”

White is collegiate scholar and professor of painting and drawing in the School of Art and Art History at the University of Iowa. She is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award in Painting and Sculpture and the National Endowment for the Arts Individual Fellowship. She was also one of seven artists featured in an Iowa Master Artist Series on Iowa Public Television.

She has exhibited her work in 43 solo shows and over 120 group exhibitions nationally and internationally. White recently completed her 12th large scale public commission. Her work is collected by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Worcester Art Museum, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Michigan State University, American Embassy in Algeria, Fidelity Investments, Citicorp, Hewlett-Packard Corporation, Linklaters, Prudential Insurance Company of America, Sioux City Art Center and Hilton Hotel and Convention Center. Her work has been reviewed in over 80 periodicals including The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, Arts Magazine, Art News, New York Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, New Art Examiner and Review magazine.

White received her B.F.A. in painting from the University of California, Berkeley, and her M.F.A. from the University of California, Davis.

Stein Galleries are open Wednesdays to Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Visitor parking areas on campus are free, and parking at the Creative Arts Center is unrestricted on weekends. A dedicated parking space for galleries patrons is available in Lot 13.
