Dozens of engaged Wright State University students, faculty and staff attended the first Know Your Rights event in the Millett Hall Atrium on Feb. 23.
The event was an opportunity to ask questions and learn about your rights and responsibilities when interacting with police.
“I’m very enlightened now,” said Gabrielle Brown, a junior majoring in marketing and event attendee. “I definitely want to spread the word to my family.”
Montgomery County Recorder Brandon McClain led a panel that included Kurt Holden, director of public safety at Wright State, Dayton police Sgt. Daniel Perkins and Dayton police officer Christine Hamilton.
“Having these discussions break down a lot of the different stereotypes and pre-conceived notions that we may have, and ultimately allow us to see that we have way more in common than differences,” said McClain.
The two-hour discussion was hosted by the City of Dayton Human Relations Council, Dayton Police, Wright State Department of Public Safety and the Black Student Union.
