1. Who/what influenced your desire to give back to the community?
My desire to give back was influenced by the many individuals in the Dayton community that gave their time, talents and encouragement to ensure that I grew up to be a successful adult. The biggest influence was my mother, who raised me by herself while working as a domestic. We were the second African-American family to move into Southern Dayton View neighborhood, which were predominately families of German and Appalachian descent and a strong Jewish presence in the 1950s and 1960s. Our neighbors accepted and reached out to one another. My mother also introduced me to our church community and instilled in me a strong work ethic and a caring and ethical nature. They were my role models and provided me with a moral compass in which to navigate my life.
