Justin Myers named Wright State Student Employee of the Year

Justin Myers, a junior majoring in earth and environmental sciences, has been named Wright State University’s 2016 Student Employee of the Year.

The honor was announced as part of National Student Employment Week, April 10-15.

Myers works as a manager in the biogeochemistry lab. He was nominated by his supervisor — Silvia Newell, assistant professor of earth and environmental sciences — for his initiative, leadership and professionalism.

“Justin has saved the lab thousands of dollars in equipment repairs, as I trust him to diagnose and repair problems with very sensitive lab equipment,” Newell said.

Myers has become an expert on most of the lab equipment and has trained all of the graduate students in the lab on how to use it.

“He is the go-to-guy for trouble shooting and repairs,” said Newell. “The graduate students look up to him and frequently seek him out to answer questions about lab protocols and nutrient data.”

Myers said he is honored by the recognition.

“I’m flattered really,” he said. “I work with some other students in the lab and really any of them I could nominate as excellent workers.”

After college, Myers hopes to work with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources or a related state agency.

Each year, the National Student Employment Association (NSEA) declares a full week in April to be National Student Employment Week. The Career Center at Wright State is a member of NSEA.

During National Student Employment Week, the Wright State Career Center encourages campus employers to celebrate the contributions of their student workers and express appreciation for their good work. Nearly 2,000 Wright State students are employed through the Student Employment Program.
