The Black Student Union hosted a Black Voices Matter Rally followed by a candlelight vigil on Oct. 8 on the North Lawn.
The rally featured speakers, poets, musical performances, special guests and information about racial injustice and voting in the Nov. 3 election. A candlelight vigil recognizing 50 victims of police violence followed the rally.
The Black Student Union planned a peaceful event with dozens of Wright State students in attendance. Participants were required to wear masks and follow physical distancing guidelines.
Dorian Buford, president of the Black Student Union, credited Sydney Wyatt, the student organization’s treasurer, for first suggesting the idea of organizing a candlelight vigil over the summer.
“We decided that we wanted to do something to make a difference,” said Wyatt.
The Black Student Union at Wright State provides students with social, cultural, and political awareness and consciousness for the upliftment of the African American community on campus.
