Wright State’s Model UN team wins delegation award for 36th straight year

Model UN Team in New York

Wright State’s Model UN team received the Distinguished Delegation award and six Outstanding Position Paper awards at the national conference in New York City.

For the 36th year in a row, Wright State University’s Model United Nations team returned from the national conference in New York City with a delegation award.

In addition to Distinguished Delegation, the team also won six Outstanding Position Paper awards:

  • General Assembly, first committee (Mike Gross and Amanda Baker)
  • General Assembly, third committee (Nickii Webb)
  • Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (Kevin Smith and Aleena Nasir)
  • Commission on Population and Development (Caroline Hoffman and Elizabeth Crisler)
  • UNICEF (UN Children’s Fund) (Emily Shook and AnnDee Pettiford)
  • Non-Proliferation Treaty Review (Garrett Teets and Matt Piekenbrock)

The Model UN is a conference similar to that of the United Nations in which students participate as delegates to various UN committees. The participants research and formulate political positions based on the actual policies of the countries they represent.

At Wright State, preparation for the conference involves more than just writing papers and learning a country’s national policy. Delegates are taught how to implement a country’s policy, how to dress, how to act in committee and what to expect from other countries they will be working with in committee.

Donna Schlagheck, chair of the Wright State Department of Political Science, served as head faculty adviser for the team. Associate political science professor Vaughn Shannon served as co-adviser.

“We are proud of our long-running tradition of excellence,” said Shannon.
