Fairmont High School student April King won the 2015 Drug Abuse Prevention Poster Contest with this poster, earning the right to a scholarship to Wright State.
A $2,000 scholarship to Wright State is an option for the grand-prize winner of a poster contest sponsored by the Montgomery County Drug-Free Coalition, which includes two instructors from the university’s College of Education and Human Services.
As winner of the 2015 Drug Abuse Prevention Poster Contest, April King from Fairmont High School will receive a $50 cash prize and a college scholarship of her choice — the $2,000 scholarship from Wright State, a $5,000 scholarship to the University of Dayton or nine free credit hours at Sinclair Community College.
King, runner-up winners Lauren Wyland from Kettering Middle School and Jessica Brock from Fairmont High, and 44 students throughout Montgomery County who submitted artwork will be recognized at an awards presentation at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, at the main branch of Dayton Metro Library, 215 E. Third Street, in Dayton.
Wright State assistant professor Mary Huber and Ryan Taylor, instructor and internship and community engagement coordinator, are both members of the coalition. They have actively worked on decreasing heroin use and increasing awareness and education on drug use in the community.
Charlotte Harris, dean of the College of Education and Human Services, helped to create the scholarship offer and will be part of a panel at the March 3 event that will recognize the students who submitted entries.
All posters will be on display at the library through March 4. The posters by King and the two runners-up, who will each receive a $25 cash prize, will also be featured on a pocket folder to be distributed at various coalition events throughout Montgomery County.
